Review – Model Tanks by Tom Cole

REVIEW: Model Tanks
Tom Cole, Amberley Publishing, ISBN: 978-1-4456-7971-6, Paperback, 96pp, 165 x 234 mm, RRP: £15.99. (Currently on offer from Amazon)

Back in the 1960’s virtually every boy would spend their pocket money on the latest Airfix kit from Woolworths. Woolworths has long gone and kits now cost a lot more than pocket money, but former Tankette editor Tom Cole uses his third book to take us back down the nostalgia route to set the scene for this book. Taking us through the nuances of scale, themes of nationality, period and type to decide what route a model-maker could take is balanced by a guide to modelling tools, materials, references and techniques. Tom discusses how to improve a model, the use of after-market products such as photo-etch and resin, painting techniques and weathering, all ably supported by photos of models in a variety of scales by some gifted model-makers.
Ideal for the beginner as a primer on the hobby, more seasoned plastic-bashers would also benefit from reading this book, as well as enjoying the trip down Memory Lane. It is also a tangible showcase of some excellent models by skilled craftsmen.
Highly recommended.

Available from good bookshops and many on-line retailers.
