Airfix have just released their long rumoured British Army 30cwt GS 4×2 Truck. The kit comes with two markings options and is on sale at a recommended price in the region of £33, which is considerably cheaper than the Gecko offering, already on the market. No mention of the marque, probably due to ongoing trademarking, but we all know it’s an Austin (I think BMW still own the trademark from when it owned British Leyland).
The Airfix press release reads as follows:
“As Britain prepared for war in the late 1930s, the military weren’t just desperately in need of vast numbers of aircraft, tanks and guns, they also needed many thousands of trucks and general utility vehicles to support all kinds of operations.
The ability to effectively supply modern, mechanized armies with the huge amounts of fuel, ammunition, food and other commodities they would need was crucial to the success of any military campaign and as the speed of war increased, so these supply lines began to lengthen. Rugged, reliable and adaptable, these trucks would have a vital role to play in the coming conflict”.
Looking at the accompanying photos this looks like a great kit and it will be interesting to see how it compares with the Gecko version.
The press release arrived too late to be included in our July President’s Choice, but here’s a comment from President Paul:
“Using the previous Austin K2 Ambulance as a start, the new kit is an injection moulded assembly of parts complete with decals (transfers for the older modeller)
Of course, this will demand immediate comparison with the previously released Gecko kit where detail, ease of assembly, accuracy and price all play a part.
Numerous suppliers are already offering the kit on pre-order, but check around for the best price, and be aware that at least one supplier offers free delivery.
No reviews as yet, although comment has been received that Airfix used a restored truck as a basis which has produced a few errors. Hopefully these are minor flaws that are easily fixed”.
