Tankette Volume 60/2 Review
Here we are at issue two of volume sixty already! This issue starts with a great cover photo of a WW2 GMC 2.5ton truck seen at a recent military vehicle rally. You really need to compare this photo with wartime shots to see how well the restorer has kitted the vehicle out. There is always the temptation to overdo it. Another classic from John Woolford.
In the regular layout of Tankette, page two is the member’s models article with several images of a variety of models including some interesting kit bashing.
Page three has the list of contacts (please refer to this list when trying to contact the association), contents and the editorial. Editor Robin Buckland refers to our recent AGM Zoom meeting which went well. There will be a report on the website shortly.
We then have the last in the series of walkarounds at Bovington from Dick Harley. With multiple images Dick gets up-close and personal with the Australian AC-1 Sentinel. An interesting read on a rarely covered subject. Of interest, we were reminded by one of our Australian members that the Sentinel saw action in the the1944 film, ‘The Rats of Tobruk’, albeit modified to resemble a German ‘Panzer’…..
Members are then reminded of the current subscription rates, and how to subscribe.
The next article is from David Fletcher who has provided a resume of the Mercedes Light Chain Tractor of 1908, with minimal information and a photo. It did not go into production after trials in Skegness and Egypt.
Adam Craske has sent in a 1/76th scale drawing of the Hornsby No.1 tracked machine of the same era, which will aid building a model.
The next article is from Hans Van Oerle and covers the U.S. Steam Tank ‘America’. It includes a photo, 1/72nd scale plans and a short history of this unique tank of 1918.
We then have a review from Cookie Sewell of the recent Tamiya set of WWII U.S. Army Infantry and tank crew figures in 1/48th scale.
Yours truly has sent in a collation of available illustrations and a drawing of the British radio handcart. Naturally, as this Tankette goes to press, I am told an example exists at the History on Wheels Museum at Eton Wick.
Robin brings ‘A Case for Books’, with six book reviews of recent publications.
He also provides a round-up of recent kit releases in ‘Out in the Market Place’, which keeps us up to speed on what is now available.
Moving to an Italian WW2 subject, the next article comes from Lorenzo Tonioli, and provides a plan and details of the Lancia RN Mo used by General Bergenzoli. The body of this truck was transferred to a Leyland retriever for General Montgomery to use as living quarters, and now resides at IWM Duxford.
The last article is from small scale maestro Andy Lang, and he describes building a British Covenanter tank using components of the IBG Crusader kit, and a lot of scratch-building. A lovely build.
Another excellent selection of articles to keep us clamouring for more!
